DR. KHALIL IBUPOTO PRESIDES THE PH.D OPEN DEFENSE SEMINAR

Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto, Vice Chancellor, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur presided over the Ph.D Open Defense Seminar held in the Department of Botany, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur

Ph.D Research Scholar Mr. Najamuddin Solangi successfully defended his research work on the topic “Micropropagation of some Elite Cultivars of Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) through Inflorescence Explants”, under the supervision of Prof. (Retd.) Dr. Ghulam Sarwar Markhand.  He said micropropagation is effective method for the elite varieties of Date Palm. These tissue plants are easy to transport. He said I have conducted my research at the Date Palm Research Institute on elite varieties i.e. Begum Jangi, Ajwa, and Aseel.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto  lauded the research work of the scholar which is well described. Dr. Khalil said it is need of time to check all the codal formalities prior to embark research because I firmly believe in systematic way in research. We will promote proper procedure and transparency at the campus. Dr. Ibupoto said Date Palm Research Institute is a prestigious institution, where we embark research on various tissue cultures i.e. Banana, Onion and other indigenous and elite varieties. We will equip scientifically this institute.

Dr. Ibupoto commented that I have will and determination to change the destiny of this University with the full cooperation and support of teachers to run the proper business of the University in order to further revive the image and perception and we will make this institution one of the best institution of the Northern Sindh, he added.

Prof. Dr. Ghulam Abbas Shar, Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences said that Botany is sound Department in terms of teaching and research. He advised the Chairman Department of Botany to submit a PC-I for its up-gradation as Institute.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Keerio, Principal, Khairpur College of Agriculture Engineering and Technology, Khairpur and Dr. Saeed Akhtar Abro, Assistant Professor, Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Sindh Jamshoro were the Experts. They said that the research work of the scholar is nice piece of work. The work is excellent and painstaking. They said research is continuous process. They stressed the need to provide same tissue of the Dates Palm to the local growers of the area.

Prof. (Retd.) Dr. Ghulam Sarwar Markhand said that the tissue culture of Date Palm is produce with the help of technology. He said it is one of the biggest industries of the world. Pakistan is 6th largest Date Palm producing country in the world. Dr. Markhand remarked that microprapogation is boundary less, so difficult and time consuming from 4 to 5 years to plant in the field. He appreciated the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto and said University will flourish under his leadership.

At the end, question answer session was held. The open defense was declared as successful. A large number of teachers and scholars attended the seminar.
